Bee's Morning Flowers

For some time now I have been e-mailing my wife a flower photograph every morning as a small way of saying "I love you."

This morning I sent her your beautiful flower. This makes you a part of a love story that began in 1965. josephthomas.deviantart.com/ar…

This is where I have begun collecting the flowers.

Please Note!: I would like to mention to all those whose flowers I have sent that I do not actually download the image and attach it to my email, but rather copy and paste the link to the flower picture. Of the thousands of artists whose work I have sent, only a few -- a very few indeed, maybe three -- have expressed concern that I "used" their work without permission, but I respect their concerns. The flowers I choose for Bee do not go online and I never claim them as my own (in fact, I include the artist's name and deviantART URL in my emails).

Here's the thing. Young people in despair terrify me. I feel that I have to do something, or say something, just to let them know that someone cares, and that maybe things will be all right. I am The Catcher in the Rye. I posted this in my journal a while back, and only Lee Anne understood. That's because Lee Anne was there when I talked Jenny out of suicide. The Catcher in the Rye is J.D. Salinger's book, of course, and this quote (by the young and emotionally troubled Holden) explains the title and also explains me:

"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be."

Reliable Disappointment by JosephThomas
Reliable Disappointment
I recently worked on a film with Paul Giamatti, who had previously played the part of cartoonist Harvey Pekar in the movie "American Splendor."
I told Paul that I had an idea for a photo for us to do together, which was to recreate one of Pekar's famous cartoon panels. He loved the idea so we posed for the photo, which I sent to Lee Anne Kortus LeeAnneKortus to have the photograph merged into the original cartoon.

Ancient wall switch at Screen Gems Stage 1 from the Lakewood Fairground days. Probably 60 years old, maybe older.  The buildings (exhibition halls) were built in 1916 for the first Southeastern Fair.

Young Love

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 8, 2015, 2:11 PM
I woke about an hour ago and lay beside Bee -- still sleeping, my arm across her body, her hand atop mine. If someone was there to see us I guess he would see us as two people in their sixties, an old married couple, but it doesn't feel that way to me. I don't feel like a newlywed -- it's not like that either. There's a different kind of energy from that, but there is definitely an energy -- a sort of low frequency but powerful pulse, like a sound that is not heard but felt deep inside the chest.
